Our curriculum is rich with:
Language:
The primary focus of all activities.
Socialization:
Students participate in experiences that help develop positive self-concept
and promote an understanding of themselves in relation to others.
Academics:
Students work at their own developmental stage within the areas of reading,
writing, math, science, and social studies.
Christian Philosophy
Our intention is to provide daily opportunities for spiritual enrichment and guidance that builds a foundation of faith. This happens in and outside of planned instruction. Our teachers look for and welcome opportunities to teach children about Jesus, His love for us, and our need and desire to serve Him.
Kindergarten Curriculum
We provide a program for children which meets their needs according to the stages of development and experience. Students are provided with a wide range of opportunities to learn, develop, and practice important life skills. Our program is designed to provide instruction which is age-appropriate and meets the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of the young child. We recognize that each child is a special and precious gift from God. We encourage and respect each individual’s spirit and uniqueness, and strive to help them reach their full potential.
Our program is based on Piaget's developmental theory which promotes play as an important avenue for learning. Therefore, we provide a variety of activities that are interesting, stimulating, and FUN!
What is Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum?
Developmentally appropriate refers to the predictable, regular stages that all children go through as they grow and develop. It also refers to the individual time table that each student has; acknowledging that all children will go through these stages at their own rate. Curriculum for children ages 5 to 8 needs to be based on our understanding of the stages of development. Developmentally appropriate curriculum balances passive activities with active ones, and involves all learning styles. By giving children opportunities to interact with their world and discuss those interactions makes it relevant for them. Oral language is important to the growth and development of the reading process to a child in this stage. Throughout the day, we provide many opportunities for children to interact in a developmentally appropriate way, through discussion and exploration.
Kindergarten children develop their potential in unique and individual ways. Each is a composite of varied characteristics and needs based on personal growth patterns, abilities, experiences and home background. However, there are characteristics common to most 5 and 6 year olds which can be used to guide teachers in creating an appropriate learning environment.
Common Core Standards
Creating common academic standards across the country was a state-led initiative, involving a coalition of governors and educators. The actual standards were developed by teachers, administrators, experts and parents. At Redeemer by the Sea Lutheran Kindergarten we teach to the California Standards in order to prepare children and ensure a smooth transition into their following grade school. We focus on Common Core as a set of standards which defines the knowledge and skills that Kindergarten students (and beyond) need to master, preparing them for the next grade and ultimately college or work.
